Markleton Sanatorium He Left Home Yesterday
John Estep, proprietor of the Miners' Home Hotel, Scalp Level, died
unexpectedly between 1 and 2 a.m. today at the Markleton Sanatorium, in Somer-
set county, in his fifty-ninth year. Mr Estep's health had been impaired for a
long time, although he was not compelled to remain in bed. He and son John
Estep Jr., left Scalp Level yesterday afternoon for Markleton, boarding the S.
& C. train at Paint Creek between 2 and 3 o'clock. Mr Estep's condition became
critical last evening, and he expired at the hour referred to above. The
remains will be brought to Scalp Level this evening or tomorrow morning.
The deceased was born on April 6, 1852, and lived for a long time in Clearfield
County. He was a miner by occupation and came to Johnstown about 1889 to work
for the Cambria Iron Company. For five years the Estep family made their home
in the John T. Harris property on Potts place, First Ward, removing to Scalp
Level in 1897. The deceased had since been engaged in the hotel business
there.
Mr Estep is survived by his wife, Mrs Annie Allsop Estep, and ten children, all
of whom are residents of this vicinity. Besides these, he is survived by his
mother, who makes her home with a daughter at Corning, N.Y., two sisters and
four brothers.
The funeral arrangements will be announced tomorrow.

The following information was taken from a paper with the following heading:
THE WINDBER ERA, Industrial Edition, Volume II, Windber, PA. December 1900,
Supplement, Illustrated Edition. Scalp Level and Paint Borough section, John
Estep.
John Estep was born in England in 1852, and came with his parents to this
country in 1856. The family located in Bloomsburg, Columbia County, where he
attended the public schools a short time, and at the age of seven years, owing
to the distressing conditions of the laboring people at that time, entered the
ore mines near that place.
A few years later the family removed to Tioga County, where Mr. Estep,
though still a boy, entered the Fallbrook coal mines, and removed from there to
Brisbin, Clearfield County where he continued his work as a miner. In 1890 he
moved to Johnstown, where he engaged in the same business. In 1897 he removed
to Scalp Level and engaged in the hotel business, becoming proprietor of the
"Miners Home." The hotel is located on the "Pike," near the line. It is a
handsome and attractive edifice, two stories and a basement floor, containing
23 rooms, heated by steam and lighted by gas. The table is supplied with the
best in the market, and the bar is stocked with the best brands of wines and
liquors.
The best evidence of the comfort and convenience of the hotel is found in
Mr. Estep's leading and popular trade.
Mr. Estep was married in 1872 to Miss Annie Alsop of Fallbrook, Tioga
County. Thirteen children have been born to them. Three of whom are dead,
seven girls and three boys survive.
Both energetic and enterprising, Mr. Estep, from humble beginings, has
taught again the story that should be impressed on the minds of the rising
generation that grit and go are certain to bring sucess. Mr. Estep is a
popular landlord, and a gentleman, coming from the people, and whose personal
intregrity and high character have placed him among the foremost business men
and citizens of the community.

Miss Estep returned on the previous Sunday evening from a visit with
relatives in Elmira in her usual good health. The next day, Monday, she
assisted in the millinery store and on that evening was taken ill with bowel
trouble. Dr. Caldwell was called to attend her, but she was not considered
dangerously ill until Friday, when peritonitis set in and it was seen that she was past earthly aid.
Deceased was born in Antrim, PA., October 1st, 1882, and was twenty-four
years and eight months old at the time of her death. She was a modest and
unassuming girl, of a bright and amiable disposition, devotedly attached to her parents, brothers and sisters and idolized by them. She was particularly fond of her eldest brother Lester J., and his was the last name spoken by her.

The body reposed in a handsome casket surrounded by a profusion of beautiful flowers, tokens of affection and respect from her family and friends.
A special train of two coaches brought a large number of friends from Morris Run, and nearly every family in Blossburg was represented in the assemblage, which filled the house to overflowing, and was massed in the yard and street adjoining.
The remains were borne to the special train, which was waiting, and with the family and friends taken to the Odd Fellows' cemetery, where the burial was made. During the services at the grave "One By One, Our Loved Ones Slowly" was sung by the quartette.
